College Application Personal Statement Marathons

by Michelle / Nov 15, 2011

Thanks to a grant from the Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation, on October 22nd and November 5th, 826 Seattle hosted free College Essay Personal Statement Marathons for high school juniors and seniors.  Held at both Ballard and Franklin High Schools, the two workshops served 140 students seeking help with their essays. Thirty trained volunteer mentors assisted students throughout the process—those who had not yet begun their personal statements to those who were practically finished. Many students have continued to work on their essays during our Monday evening high school tutoring.

Special thanks to 826 Seattle volunteers Rebecca Brinson and Sonia Michaels—essay experts who facilitated tutor trainings and were on-hand for the marathons; and to Julie Chapman, Mike Hoddap, Beth Olsen, and Michael Lawson—Ballard and Franklin personnel who helped make the marathons a success.  Can’t wait for next year!
