MUSIC + MUSTACHES = FUNDRAISER FOR 826 SEATTLE

826 Seattle is seeking participation from local musicians, men with a talent for growing mustaches, men with stunning full-grown mustaches, and enthusiastic mustache supporters in its third and final Mustache-a-thon fundraiser. The six-week fundraiser starts October 9 and concludes November 21 with a Mustache Rocks! Music showcase and soiree at the Sunset Tavern, located at 5433 Ballard Avenue in Ballard. The music showcase is open to the public. To participate, contact Justin Allan, Events Coordinator, at Justin@826seattle.org.

Since the dawn of time, music and mustaches have gone hand in hand (or rather lip over mouth). From the hirsute Frank Zappa to the flamboyant Freddie Mercury, rock stars have donned mustaches and created fashion trends, proving to the world that mustaches are a force to be reckoned with.

In this glorious tradition, Seattle-area musicians are coming out in droves to put their mustache-growing powers to good use by raising awareness (and a few bucks) for 826 Seattle's 2008 Mustache-a-Thon. Who better to champion this noble cause than those who live and die by the songs they write and those who agonize over lyrics and meaning?

HISTORY OF THE 826 SEATTLE MUSTACHE-A-THON

In the fall of 2006, an 826 Seattle volunteer proposed a unique fundraising idea: gather a group of fearless men, convince them to put their naturally occurring facial follicles to good use, and challenge them to a) grow a very fashionable mustache; b) gather financial support for 826 Seattle from family, friends, co-workers, 'stache fans, and complete strangers; and c) garner mustache glory that would be the stuff of legend. Although the 26 mustache farmers were a bit trepidatious at first, once the money started rolling in, they embraced the event — and their mustaches — with gusto. The first 826 Seattle Mustache-a-thon raised an incredible $10,000.

In 2007, encouraged by the success of the 826 Seattle Mustache-a-thon, 826 tutoring centers across the country launched their own Mustache-a-thons. 826 Seattle organized the second iteration of the follicle frenzy (The Son of 'Stache) and, with the help of 33 upper lips (including one woman who wore a fake mustache for six weeks), garnered citywide attention and exceeded the $15,000 goal.

The 2008 Mustache-a-thon will be 826 Seattle's final mustache fundraiser, and it will be bigger than ever. In addition to mustache growing and traditional fundraising, the 2008 Mustache-a-thon will feature a Battle of the Bands, in which bands compete to be the Emerald City's most philharmonic philanthropist and the chance to participate in the Mustache Rocks! Showcase. Already answering the call to arms (or mustache farms) are lo-fi electro-rocksters Say Hi (formerly Say Hi to Your Mom), comedy/music troupe de jour Black Daisy, and special guests to be announced. KEXP DJ Troy Nelson will bring dignity and grace to the evening as emcee.
